Interior signage for e-Science Centre
Graphics Lab were commissioned to design interior directional signage for 15 South College Street, home to the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), the e-Science Institute and the National e-Science Centre.
The building is a converted church that houses four floors of offices, meeting rooms, training labs and lecture theatre. Due to the confusing layout of the architecture and the large number of events and visitors the building accommodates, ICMS and the e-Science Institute had a great need to improve their existing signage.
The brief consisted of assessing the current wayfinding system in their complex building, and a proposal detailing a new logical signage solution to facilitate visitors’ journeys. The new design had to meet their current needs but also be flexible to accommodate future requirements. We also had to select materials that would attach to a variety of wall surfaces, from smooth plasterwork to uneven stone walls, which proved quite challenging.
Floor levels were numbered and colour coordinated to ease route finding. Large panels showing a cross-section of the building were placed at the entrance to each floor to show the location of different facilities and how they relate to the original architecture.
To allow for changes, we used vinyl lettering that could be replaced when required at a lower cost than replacing an entire sign.
As well as a complex set of directional signs, we also created signs for the reception area, offices, doors and stairways.
