Supporting Derek is a certificated intellectual disability and dementia e-learning course.

This e-learning resource provides a practical development guide to support staff working with people who have an intellectual disability and dementia.

Principal authors: Heather Wilkinson, Karen Watchman and Diana Kerr.

Key stakeholders: Joseph Rowntree Foundation, University of Edinburgh and Centre for Research on Families and Relationships.

The successful candidate will have a degree in a related subject and demonstrable ability in a range of technical development skills including object oriented PHP, JavaScript, and CSS. Also desirable would be experience with PHP frameworks, ASP/VB Script, JavaScript libraries (e.g. jQuery), and ASP.NET.

Candidates must also have excellent communication and presentation skills, a proven ability to self manage and prioritize a varied and challenging workflow of development and support tasks, have a sound knowledge of current issues surrounding educational systems and data management and be able to fit into an established and award winning e-learning team. Visual flair and a keen design sensibility will also prove advantageous.

Please note that this position is initially offered on a two year fixed term contract though there is a reasonable chance of renewal beyond that date.

    • We were commissioned by the Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) to design and produce a set of Branding Guidelines and display banners to coincide with the opening of their new building (Scottish Centre of Regenerative Medicine Building). The guidelines include advice on the correct use of the logo, fonts, colours and images as well as stationery designs and poster templates.

The website has over 340 pages of content and uses interactive graphics, animations, film clips and quizzes so that the information is interesting and easy to use. Many of the pages have links to other useful sites, printable checklists and useful contacts for further local and national information.

    Project Background

    It has been developed by Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS), The National Advisory Committee for Stroke, The University of Edinburgh Learning Technology Section (LTS) and The Big Lottery Fund Scotland. This project marks our 4th year of successful collaboration with CHSS.

    Technical Overview

    The site was constructed by LTS using WordPress, an open source content management system built on PHP and MySQL. Although WordPress is mainly utilised as a blogging tool, it offers a great degree of flexibility and was easily customised by LTS to create a bespoke VLE. The built-in commenting features of WordPress lend themselves nicely to a review process, and throughout the authoring phase each page of content was regularly reviewed by a group of 30 reviewers and contributors. During this phase more than 1000 comments were collected creating an effective collaborative working environment. This allowed contributors to shape the content of the site, in their own time and without having to attend lengthy review meetings.

    Official Launch

    The website will be officially launched at the UK Stroke Forum at the SECC Glasgow, 29th November to 1st December.

The Learning Technology Section will be well represented at this meeting with no fewer than 4 of us in attendance.

    We will be presenting papers, posters and demonstrations of various recent projects, including:

    COM:MAND – our round trip solution for creating, embedding, mapping and versioning learning outcomes (COM:MAND Project).

    eeSURG – our award winning collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) features a bespoke fully integrated learning, teaching, communication and assessment environment for online distance study students in Surgical Sciences (eeSURG Project).

    RECAL – an update on our ground-breaking work to prolong the lifespan of technologically obsolete learning resources through disaggregation and script based recompilation (RECAL Project).

    MALAWI – A report on our longstanding Scottish government resourced activity to work with colleagues in Malawi in supporting new curricula and embedding e-learning technology into practice (Malawi Projects).

    CLEO – Reporting on the NHS Education Scotland funded development of a federated collection of online learning objects supporting dental education across all of the country’s dental schools (CLEO Project).

    Manager for e-learning Michael Begg will also be acting as opening discussant on a session relating to social media in medical education.

    We also expect to be drinking coffee and eating cake. Quite a lot.
